Property development in Western Australia will become a faster and more affordable process following the announcement that building licence applications can now be privately certified.
Western Australian parliament passed new laws surpassing the need to have building licence applications in Western Australia certified by local government.
The Property Council was a leading advocate for this major reform which will act to speed up the approval process for property development in Western Australia.
The new Building Act and its associated provisions, like private certification, is the culmination of five years’ worth of advocacy work involving two State Governments and several governmental agencies.
The Property Council acknowledges the significant contributions of Western Australian Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien and Building Commission Executive Director Peter Gow.
Property Council Western Australian division Executive Director Joe Lenzo says the property development sector is looking forward to working with the newly formed Building Commission in implementing the private certification regulations, among other initiatives included in the new Building Act.
Mr Lenzo says this is a modernisation of building industry regulations, bringing Western Australia into line with other Australian states and territories.
“In the past, property developers with building applications had to wait in costly local government queues for weeks and months to get straight forward building certifications, for big and small projects. This added to the cost of doing business in WA”.
“The new laws allow developers to engage qualified and registered experts to privately certify their building applications according to Australian building standards, and in a more timely manner,” says Mr Lorenzo.
