SEQ Housing Forum

The Council of Mayors has established an online forum to hear the community’s views on affordable housing for the South East Queensland (SEQ) region. The website also provides resources, photos, FAQs, and a video.

Social media and online forums are becoming standard practices of community consultation. Bang the Table is an organisation dedicated to providing online solutions for community consultation and they are doing a fantastic job.

Thank you to Leo Jensen, Project Manager, for sending this innovative program to The Planning Boardroom. We are confident that the program will be successful, and it could be implemented in other regions across the country.

Each week for the past 10 years, around 1000 people have moved to South East Queensland. The region now has a population of three million people and this is forecast to reach about 4.3 million people by 2031.

This unprecedented growth presents a variety of challenges and issues for the region. To address these, the Council of Mayors (SEQ) recently re-evaluated and confirmed its key priorities, which include a strong focus on infrastructure, dealing with issues ranging from easing the burden of traffic congestion to improving housing affordability.

Lifestyle is often a key factor in the decision to move to South East Queensland. The Liveable Compact Cities Project hopes to determine the best housing options that will meet our lifestyle choices both now and in the future but also meet our historical and heritage requirements. The Council of Mayors (SEQ) wants to create a South East Queensland that offers flexible and affordable housing options for everyone, irrespective of their circumstances.

The LCCP will consult with sections of the community and use feedback and the best available research to shape future policy on housing options and affordability. This policy will outline a vision for how homes in South East Queensland could look in the future.
