The next stage has begun in the largest private infrastructure project in Canberra’s history.
Canberra Airport’s $420 million infrastructure investment has been officially launched, with the foundation stone laid for the construction of the Western Concourse Terminal.
The new Airport terminal building has been designed to reflect Canberra Airport’s role as a regional and national gateway and will reflect design concepts used by national institutions elsewhere in Canberra.
GMB Architects were successful in a design competition in 2005 for the new facilities.
Canberra Airport managing director Stephen Byron said that last year saw the Southern Concourse Terminal opened in the first part of the Canberra “Airport AirVolution”.
The next stage has seen the old Qantas terminal removed, ready to launch the new Western Concourse Terminal.
The new concourse will mirror the Southern Concourse Terminal with the two terminals being joined by a spectacular glass atrium.
“The focus is all on the passenger with new and additional airline lounges, new aerobridges, a doubling of the passenger screening area, more check-in counters, greater amenities and retail offerings, and with another four-storey car park providing completely covered access to the new terminals,” Byron said.
This next stage also includes Australia’s first fully enclosed taxi rank featuring television screens and other services.
